Copyright Registration
Copyright is the automatic legal right that protects original creative works — books, music, films, software, paintings, and more — from the moment of creation. While copyright exists automatically, formal registration provides a public record of ownership and is essential for enforcement, licensing, and legal action against infringers.
Your Creative Work Deserves Protection
Critical: Copyright registration does not create the right — the right exists from the moment of creation. But without registration, proving ownership in court requires circumstantial evidence. In infringement proceedings, a registered copyright certificate is prima facie proof of ownership and date of creation — unregistered works face a much higher evidentiary burden.
Literary Work Copyright
Books, articles, scripts
Registration for books, novels, articles, poems, screenplays, technical manuals, and other literary works — including works in any Indian or foreign language.
Software Copyright
Source code and object code
Computer programs are literary works under the Copyright Act. Registration protects the source code, object code, and software documentation against copying — important for software product companies and SaaS businesses.
Artistic & Musical Work
Paintings, logos, compositions
Paintings, drawings, photographs, logos, sound recordings, and musical compositions can all be registered. Artists and music composers often overlook registration — losing enforcement options later.
Cinematograph Films
Short films, documentaries
Films and video productions — including short films, web series, documentaries, and advertising films — qualify for copyright registration as cinematograph works.
What Works Are Protected by Copyright?
Copyright protects original creative expression — not ideas, facts, or styles.
Literary Works
Books, articles, essays, poems, scripts, databases, computer programs, and any written or typed composition. The work must be original — even a short creative work qualifies.
Artistic Works
Paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, engravings, maps, logos, architectural drawings. Artistic works are protected regardless of their artistic quality.
Musical Works & Sound Recordings
Musical compositions (melody, lyrics) and their sound recordings are separate copyrights. A song has at least two separate copyrights — the composition and the recording.
Cinematograph Films & Broadcasts
Films and television broadcasts are protected works. The producer typically holds the film copyright, while individual contributors (director, writer, composer) hold separate underlying copyrights.
Why Register Copyright Formally?
While copyright is automatic, registration provides critical practical and legal advantages.
Prima Facie Evidence in Court
A copyright registration certificate is accepted as prima facie evidence of ownership in Indian courts — significantly simplifying enforcement proceedings and shifting the burden of proof to the infringer.
Enables Infringement Action
While you can file an infringement suit without registration, practical enforcement — sending legal notices, approaching the police under Section 63, or claiming statutory damages — is much stronger with a certificate.
Software Protection
For software companies, copyright registration of the source code prevents competitors from copying code, creating derivative works, or reverse engineering — protecting your core product investment.
Commercial Licensing
Publishers, streaming platforms, distributors, and content buyers require proof of copyright ownership before signing licensing agreements. Registration provides this proof cleanly.
International Protection
India is a member of the Berne Convention — so Indian copyright registration is recognized in 180+ member countries. Your creative work is protected worldwide under the national laws of each member country.
Estate and Assignment
Copyright can be transferred, assigned, or bequeathed as property. A registered copyright makes these transactions legally cleaner — with a clear public record of ownership and transfers.
Copyright Registration Process in India
The Copyright Office processes applications within 1–3 months. The process is fully online.

Get Expert HelpIdentify the Work and Category
Determine the category of your work — literary, artistic, musical, cinematograph, or sound recording. Each category has slightly different form requirements and examination criteria.
Prepare the Application (Form XIV)
Complete Form XIV on the copyright.gov.in portal with details of the work, author, year of creation, publication status, and applicant information.
Upload the Work
Upload a sample of the work — title page of a book, screenshots of software UI, image of the artwork, or first and last pages of the manuscript. Software applications require submission of representative source code sections.
Pay Filing Fee
Pay the government fee online — ranging from ₹500 (literary/musical work without sound recording) to ₹5,000 (cinematograph films) per work. The fee is nominal compared to the protection obtained.
Mandatory 30-Day Waiting Period
After filing, the application is posted in the Copyright Office diary for 30 days — allowing anyone who disputes the authorship to raise an objection. Our team monitors the diary for any third-party objections.
Examination and Certificate Issuance
After the waiting period with no objections, the Copyright Office examines the application and issues a copyright registration certificate — typically within 1–3 months of filing.
Documents Required for Copyright Registration
Requirements differ by work type — but applicant identity and a copy of the work are always needed.
Applicant Documents
PAN Card
PAN of the author/creator or the entity applying for copyright registration.
Aadhaar Card
Aadhaar of the individual applicant for identity verification.
Authorization Letter (for companies)
If the company is the copyright owner (e.g., for software or films), an authorization letter from the company directing the filing.
Copyright protects expression, not ideas. Two authors can independently write books on the same topic — both hold copyright in their own expression. There is no copyright in titles, names, or slogans (those are protected by trademark registration).
After Copyright Registration
Registration is the beginning — active monitoring and enforcement protects your creative work.
Use the © Symbol
Add the © notice to your work — © [Year] [Your Name/Company]. While not legally required in India, it is internationally recognized as a copyright claim and deters infringers.
Register Copyright in Key Export Markets
If your work is commercially exploited in the USA or Europe, register with the US Copyright Office (Library of Congress) and equivalent bodies — enabling statutory damages claims in those jurisdictions.
Record Any Assignment or License
When assigning or licensing your copyright commercially, register the assignment or exclusive license with the Copyright Office — creating a public record of the rights granted.
