HRA Calculator: Calculate Your House Rent Allowance Exemption
An HRA Calculator helps salaried employees estimate how much of their House Rent Allowance (HRA) may be exempt from income tax when they live in rented accommodation. HRA is an allowance that an employer may include in an employee’s salary to help meet rental expenses. The amount eligible for exemption depends on the HRA received, rent paid, eligible salary components and the location of the rented home. Use Finace India’s HRA Calculator to get an indicative estimate by entering the details requested in the form.
How to Use the HRA Calculator
- 1Step 1:
Enter Basic Salary + DA.
Add the salary amount relevant to the period you are calculating. For HRA exemption purposes, salary generally includes basic salary, dearness allowance where it forms part of retirement benefits, and qualifying turnover-based commission, subject to the applicable rules.
- 2Step 2:
Enter HRA Received.
Enter the HRA actually received from your employer for the relevant period. Use the amount shown in your salary details rather than your total salary or other allowances.
- 3Step 3:
Enter Rent Paid.
Add the rent paid for the accommodation you occupy. Keep rent receipts, rental agreement and payment records available so you can verify the figures and provide supporting details if required by your employer or tax process.
- 4Step 4:
Select City Type.
Choose the city category that matches the location of your rented accommodation. Under the commonly applicable HRA exemption formula, the salary percentage limit is generally 50% for the specified metro cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai—and 40% for other locations. Select the option that accurately reflects your circumstances.
- 5Step 5:
Calculate and review.
Select Calculate Now to view the estimate. Check each amount and the selected city type if the result seems unexpected. Use Reset to clear the form and enter a new set of figures.
How Is HRA Exemption Calculated?
For eligible employees, the exempt amount is generally the lowest of these three figures: the actual HRA received from the employer; rent paid minus 10% of the relevant salary; or 50% of the relevant salary for the specified metro cities and 40% for other cities. The salary used for this calculation is defined by the applicable tax rules and may not be the same as gross salary. The HRA Calculator uses the details entered to estimate the exemption; check the result against current rules and your salary records.
Who Can Claim HRA Exemption?
HRA exemption is generally relevant to an employee who receives HRA as part of salary and pays rent for residential accommodation, subject to applicable conditions. If you live in a house you own or do not pay rent, an HRA exemption is generally not available. Keep in mind that tax treatment can also depend on the tax regime and rules applicable to the relevant financial year. Do not assume that entering an amount in the calculator automatically makes it eligible for exemption.
Documents and Details to Keep Ready
Before calculating or submitting an HRA claim, review your salary details, HRA amount, rental period, rent payments and the address of the rented property. Your employer may ask for rent receipts or other supporting information. Additional landlord details may be required in particular situations, such as when annual rent exceeds the applicable reporting threshold. Requirements can vary, so confirm the current documentation rules with your employer or a qualified tax professional.
Important Note
This HRA Calculator provides an estimate for general information and planning. It is not a tax filing, assessment or professional tax advice service. Results depend on the accuracy of the inputs and the rules applicable to your circumstances.
