As your food business grows beyond the Basic Registration threshold (₹12 lakhs turnover), upgrading to a State Licence becomes mandatory. State Licences are issued by the respective State Food Safety Authority — each state has its own FSSAI implementation body. State Licences involve a more detailed application, site inspection, and compliance requirements compared to Basic Registration. The licence is valid for 1–5 years and covers food manufacturing, storage, distribution, restaurants, hotels, and food retail operations within the state.

Critical: FSSAI State Licence must be renewed before expiry — operating with an expired licence is a legal offence and can result in removal from food aggregator platforms (Swiggy, Zomato) and loss of supplier contracts. Renewal applications should be filed at least 30 days before expiry. The licence certificate must be displayed at the food business premises at all times.
